Monmouth is located in western Illinois in Warren County (of which it is the county seat) just west-southwest of Galesburg near the U.S. Highway 67/U.S. 34 interchange. They are the host city for Monmouth College, a four-year institution of higher learning.

Among outdoor activies, Citizens Lake West provides a relaxing atmosphere for those who like to camp and do a little fishing while golfers will be challenged by Gibson Woods Golf Course.

Among the annual events held in town include the "Maple City Summerfest", held the 2nd Saturday in July, and the "Warren County Prime Beef Festival", held the Wednesday following Labor Day.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 9,425, a decrease of 64 since 1990.
