Oakland, established in 1835, is located in eastern Illinois in northeastern Coles County about 30 miles south-southeast of Champaign and 25 miles northeast of Mattoon along Highway 133 on the banks of the Embarras River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 977, a decrease of 19 since 1990. Walnut Point State Park is located about 5 miles north of town across the Douglas County line providing area residents opportunities to camp, bird-watch and do a little fishing on the 60-acre lake.
