Oakwood is located in eastern Illinois in Vermilion County between Champaign and Danville along U.S. Highway 150 just south of Interstate 74 about 3 miles north of the Salt Fork of the Vermilion River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,578, an increase of 45 since 1990.

The area provides recreation for area residents and visitors in the form of Kickapoo State Park and Middle Fork SFWA north of town.
