Shawneetown is located in southeastern Illinois in Gallatin County, (of which it is the county seat), east of Harrisburg on Highway 13. It is situated about three miles inland from the Ohio River at the northeastern edge of the Shawnee National Forest.

On an historical note, the town claims the third oldest brick building, as well as the first bank, in the state.
