A hand-hewn stone structure built in 1845, the courthouse crowns a sandstone bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. Abraham Lincoln, riding circuit, practiced law here. Dred Scott, a slave whose Supreme Court decision advanced black rights, was given overnight housing in the courthouse jail. Tours may be arranged with advance notice.
