Vienna is located in southern Illinois in Johnson County (of which it is the county seat) 20 miles northwest of Metropolis along Interstate 24 about 10 miles south of the Lake of Egypt and 20 miles south of Marion. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,612, an increase of 166 since 1990.

Recreational opportunities abound for residents and visitors alike. The town is only minutes in three directions from the Shawnee National Forest and all it has to offer. In additon, Ferne Clyffe State Park, Giant City State Park, Crab Orchard Lake & NWR and Cedar Lake are a short distance to the northwest; the Trail of Tears State Forest is to the west and Dixon Springs State Park is to the east. Locally, the Vienna Community Park offers a quick fix for those forced to spend much of the day indoors.
