Wood River is located in southwestern Illinois in Madison County just across the Mississippi River from northeast St Louis. In a revitalization effort to restore some of the town's original beauty, they have instituted a "Facade Rebate Program." Business owners and commercial building owners are encouraged to spruce up doors, windows, and awnings as well as install new signs and exterior lighting. Recreational opportunities in the area include Belk Park Golf Course.
