Jo Daviess county is located in the extreme northwest corner of Illinois and was created in 1827. Its western border is the Mississippi River with Wisconsin to the north, Stephenson County to the east and Carroll County to the south.

The county lays claim to the highest point in Illinois--Charles Mound, at an elevation of 1,235 feet. It is located near the town of Scales Mound. The entire town is included in the National Register of Historic Districts owing to the stunning turn-of-the-century architecture.

One of the first and most important industies, other than fur trading, was that of lead mining. In fact, the county seat of Galena is named for the ore.

The county population on July 1, 1999, was 21,562, a decrease of 259 over the 1990 census.
