Wabash county was created in 1824 from Edwards County after no agreement could be reached on the placement of the county seat. The county is located in southern Illinois on the banks of the Wabash River. Its county seat is Mt. Carmel and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 12,513, a decrease of 598 over the 1990 census. Wabash Valley College is located in Mt.
