Clare is a western maritime county in Munster Province, bounded on the north by Galway Bay and County Galway, on the east by Lough Derg and County Tipperary, on the south by the River Shannon, County Limerick and Kerry, and on the west by the , and on the west by the [atlocean]. It covers an area of 1230 square miles.

The coast is irregular, bordered in great part by high, rocky cliffs. The inland surface is generally hilly, especially in the east, where the Slieve Aughty and Bernagh mountains are located. The chief rivers are the [rivshann], Fergus, Rine, Claureen, and Cullenagh. There are numerous lakes such as Lough Derg, through which the Shannon flows, and Loughs Muckanagh, Cutra, Graney, Rea, and Coole.

The county seat is [ennis]. The towns of Kilrush and Kilaloe are also important. There are several popular seaside resorts.
