Neosho River

In the Neosho River Drainage Basin, the headwaters of the Neosho River are in Morris County. The general flow is to the southeast, passing through the the historic Council Grove and Council Grove Lake before merging with the Cottonwood River in Lyon County. The enlarged river then passes through John Redmond Reservoir in Coffey County. Eventually merging with the Lightning river, or creek in Cherokee County before exiting the state into Oklahoma.

The Neosho River is about 450 miles in length, 300 miles of which are in Kansas. Spring and Fall flooding are common.

The stream traverses a very fertile section. On the lower river in and around Labette County exist evidences of early or ancient Native American civilization. Fragments of pottery and flint implements being frequently found.
