Founded in 1869 Population: (2000) 485. The population in 1910 was 1,462. Elevation: 828 feet. Located in Wilson County, 11 miles east of Fredonia, the county seat. Fresh from the outlet of Toronto Lake and State Park, the Verdigris River runs on the West side of town, merging, (just south of Altoona), with Cedar Creek flowing on the east side of town.

The US Geological Survey, (USGS), maintains a "Real Time" water measuring station at Altoona.
