Founded: 1867; Located in Ellsworth County, (county seat), in the North Central Region of the state 7 miles south of I-70. State Hwys 14, 140 and 156 run through the town. Pop. (2000) 3000, a decrease of 158 since 1990. Elev: 1550 feet. Established near Fort Harker and the Smoky Hill River, the fledgling community nearly succomed to several nearly simultaenous calamities, but grew to compete with Abilene as a cattle shipping point, only to lose it's statsus to Dodge City as more railroads were built. Visitors will find three lovely parks, a brand new swimming pool, one of the best golf courses in central Kansas, and two state lakes within 15 miles.
