The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 24,462, a decrease of 1,050 since 1990. Located in Lyon County, (county seat), in the Central Region of the state and SW of Topeka. Situated along I-35 near Melvern Lake and John Redmond Reservoir as well as Lyon State Lake.

The Emporia State University, The Kansas School Naturalist, Flint Hills Technical College and Flint Hills Technical College are popular accredited schools. The Neosho River runs SW through Emporia to merge with the Cottonwood Falls S of town.

Attractions include: Emporia Zoo, National Teachers Hall of Fame. Empporia is the founding city of Veterans Day and home of the All Veterans Tribute.

Heart of America Shakespeare Festival Kansas City MO June18-July7 The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival is set under the stars in South Moreland Park near Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. It is a perfect way to spend a summer evening with family and friends. They have several programs to study and explore such as Speaker's Bureau and Poster and Sonnet Contest. The faculty includes theatre professionals, actors, and educators experienced in performing and teaching Shakespeare. Many of the instructors are veterans of festival productions.
