The minor river basins or watersheds in the Marais des Cygnes River Drainage Basin are comprised of the Marais des Cygnes River, Little Osage River and the Marmaton. Most rivers have more than one branch.
The Marais des Cygnes River served as a route for 18th century fur trappers heading west. The nationally historical and famous Chautauqua Assemblies were held near the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River.
