Rec Area Type: National/State Park
The U.S.A.C.E. operates three large reservoirs in the Marais des Cygnes River Drainage Basin, fed by the Marais des Cygnes River. These are Pomona Lake -, Melvern Lake and Hillsdale Lake. Melvern Reservoir offers 6,900 acres for boating and fishing. The eastern Flint Hills park was named for Kansas' most famous native son. The park and adjacent Melvern Wildlife Area feature native tallgrass prairie and a variety of wildlife. Hunting is allowed but you need to check with the park office for a detailed map of open areas. There are 20 miles of horse and hiking within the park's boundaries and 22 miles of equestrian trails on the south side of the lake.
