Located in the Southeast Region of Kansas, this river has two major branches. Both rivers are within the Verdigris River Drainage Basin. Each branch in it's own drainage basin. The Upper Verdigris River drains toward the south east. Starting in Chase County, and passing through Lyon County, Greenwood County, Elk County, Chautauqua County, Wilson County, Montgomery County and the western edge of Labette County.
The Middle Verdigris River is primarily in Montgomery County and Labette County.
Considerable mining in this area has left it's mark on the landscape, An open prairie with low rolling hills and big skies.
