The community of Washington is the county seat of Washington County. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,251, a decrease of 53 since 1990.
Primarily an agricultural area, wheat and corn are the primary crops grown. Pork production and cow-calf herds roam the beautiful prairie grasslands. Other industries ranging from metal fabrication, construction, silk screening, woodworking, pet wholesaling, pallet building, and machining.
Washington County is embraced within that fertile territory which lies between the Blue River and Republican River as they flow southeast into the Kansas River. The Little Blue River pays most particular attention to Washington County, in that most of the county is drained by that stream.
