Winfield is the county seat of Cowley County. Southeast of Wichita along US Highway 77 and on the banks of the Walnut River near Wellington.
To the west, some of the best wheat producing land in the state and, to the east, the hilly, sometimes rugged country is well suited for cattle. Wichita to the north provides big city advantages within easy driving range.
The world famous Walnut Valley Music Festival, held the third weekend in September, is just one of many Winfield events, including Kanza Days in May, Art in the Park in October, Horsefeathers and Applesauce Dinner Theatre and the Cowley County Fair in the summer, and the Isle of Lights in Island Park at Christmas. Quail Ridge, the City's municipal golf course, continues to be rated one of the top public courses in the state and a valuable asset for the community.
