This railway offers narrated scenic tours through the Appalachian Mountains along the Big South Fork, a branch of the Cumberland River over the historic tracks of the Kentucky and Tennessee Railway. Trains are boarded at the company's recently restored freight warehouse, where live music typically precedes boarding; a restaurant and gift shops are available. The cliff-hugging train ride features a tunnel and a bridge crossing as the train descends to the floor of the Big South Fork River Vally at a rate of over 600 feet in five miles, with a stopover in Blue Heron, an abandoned coal mine company town that has been restored by the National Park Service. Operating April-November, trips of various lengths are offered; departure times vary with season. Please call ahead for schedule. Group rates available, tickets sold first-come, first-serve. The railway is headquartered about 30 miles south of Somerset, in downtown Stearns.
