Mansfield is located in De Soto Parish (of which it is the parish seat) within the Sportsman's Paradise Region, between Shreveport and Many along US Highway 171 near Converse, Grand Cane, the Toledo Bend Reservoir, Clear Lake, and Smithport Lake.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 5,021, a decrease of 368 since 1990.
