When Columbus first set foot in the new world, the Marksville Ceremonial Center was already 1,000 years old. Considered by professional archaeologists to be of unique national significance, the site is located adjacent to the town of Marksville on a bluff overlooking Old River. The Indians who inhabited this site 2,000 years ago were in a great location for a view over and access to the floodplain animals and fish. The main portion of the site is surrounded by a semi-circular earthwork. Theinterpretive center/museum is a spacious old building housing many displays and artifacts. There are also nature trails, picnic grounds and an outdoor classroom to make the visit memorable.
