Pittsfield is located in Berkshire County (of which it is the county seat) 50 miles NW of Springfield between Dalton and the New York state line along Highway 7/20 on the banks of the Housatonic River near Onota Lake. Pittsfield is credited with the creation of the county fair. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 45,513, a decrease of 3,109 since 1990. Pittsfield is part of the Pittsfield, Massachusetts metro area.
