The University of Manitoba was established in 1877. The University was the first to be established in western Canada.
Today, UM is the largest public university in Manitoba, and the only research intensive post-secondary educational institution. There are four campuses, as well as several field stations. Four colleges make up the University: St. Andrew's College (Ukrainian Orthodox), St. John's College (Anglican), St. Paul's College (Roman Catholic), and University College (secular), as well as College universitair de Saint-Boniface, a French-speaking college.
