The long-standing friendship between Canada and the United States inspired Dr. Henry Moore of Islington, Ontario, to conceive the International Peace Garden. The garden is aptly located near the geographic centre of North America on 1,000 hectares of Manitoba forest reserve and gently rolling North Dakota farmland. Opened during the Depression in 1932, it was enhanced with ornamental trees, shribs and man-made lakes. After the war, a complex formal garden - made of six sections - was created. the youth camps, picnic areas and commemorative displays on its grounds are proof of the spirit of good fellowship that the garden inspires.
