Located in the Catoctin Mountains, the 5,000-acre Cunningham Falls State Park is known for its history and scenic beauty, as well as its renowned 78-foot cascading waterfall; the Falls is located one-half mile from the lake in the Houck Area via the Falls Trail. The park also takes in the Catoctin Iron Furnace Historical Site, in operation from 1776-1903; much of the site is accessible.
Recreation within the park includes swimming at three designated areas of Hunting Creek Lake; canoe and rowboat rentals are offered during the summer and a boat ramp is available. Nine scenic trails offer hiking opportunities from easy to difficult; no mountain bikes on trails.
Two camping areas within the park offer five camping loops and a limited number of camping cabins; reservations for these sites are encouraged. Several picnicking sites and a group shelter are also available.
