The museum is on 10-acre site located on a 19th century shipyard where large wooden sailing ships were constructed. The Maritime History Building contains model ships, paintings, terific interpretive exhibits of life at sea, and maritime technology. Often visiting vessels may be boarded when they are docked at the museum.
Located in the shipyard is the Boat Shop. This is where traditional boat construction and repair siklls are taught. Guests can watch the building process and visit five of the original shipyard buildings.
"Lobstering and the Maine Coast" is an exhibit that describes the development of one of the state's leading ecomomic concerns. May through Thanksgiving weekend tours of the ship yard are offered. A children's play ship is also found at the museum. Daily boat cruises are available for additional fee from June through October.
Open daily from 9:30 to 5pm, except for major holidays.
