Clare is in Clare County, and in the Central Region. This community is located northwest of Bay City between Mount Pleasant and Houghton Lake along US Highway 27 near Sanford and Littlefield lakes. While having an Irish history, Clare was named after a county in Ireland, with a special St. Patricks Day celebration every March. Clare was founded during the early 1870s, when the Pere Marquette Railroad built a station here during the lumber boom. It was situated into a village in 1879 and later as a city in 1891.
