De Witt is in Clinton County, and in the Central Region. This community is located north of Lansing along the Looking Glass River and north of Hwy 27. De Witt is in the Lansing-East Lansing, Michigan metro area. The town of De Witt was named after De Witt Clinton, Governor of New York during the 1830s. It was settled first by Captain David Scott, the city father who moved here from Ann Arbor in 1833 and claimed the land. The town remained under the jurisdiction of De Witt Township until 1928, when it was incorporated as a village. De Witt functions primarily as a bedroom community to the Lansing area, but also contains some small businesses. A popular attraction here is the Looking Glass River, which flows through the park on the south side of town. The river has a mirror-like effect, of which is acceptingly noticed.
