Hillman is in Montmorency County, and in the Northern Region. This community is located northeast of Traverse City between Gaylord and Alpena along Highway 32 on the banks of the Thunder Bay River near Long Lake and Fisher Pond.

Hillman was founded by John Hillman Stevens in 1880, who purchased the land here first. Later, he gave his land to the city, which was officially organized as a village in 1891.

Today, Hillman has become the biggest city in the county, with several manufacturing facilities, including tool-and-die, electrical supplies and lumber products.
