Montague is in Muskegon County, and in the West-Southwest Region. This community is located on the north side of White Lake off of US Hwy 31, situated across the lake from the town of Whitehall. Settlement in Montague started in 1855 when Nat Sargent built the first house there. The town was first incorporated into a village in 1883, and named after William Montague Ferry, one of the town fathers. The settlement was later incorporated into a city in 1935. Now days in Montague, the economy is supported by a combination of factors, including tourism, some local manufacturing and its close proximity as a commuter city to Muskegon.
