Muskegon is located in Muskegon County (it is the county seat), and in the West-Southwest Region. It lies northwest of Grand Rapids along U.S. Highway 31, on the banks of the Muskegon River.

In 1812, Jean Baptiste Recollet set up a trading post at Muskegon. Muskegon was once a major lumber center. By the 1890s lumber declined, but the city industrialized rapidly.

Industry continues to contribute to the Muskegon economy, supporting some 39,000 residents. Major employers are Howmet Corporation, an aerospace firm in nearby Whitehall, and Sappi Fine Papers in Muskegon. Wholesale, retail and the service trades also provide employment. The Muskegon Museum of Art and Hackley Library were given to the city by lumber-era magnate Charles Hackley. Heritage Landing is a lakeshore venue for Muskegon's Summer Celebration. Other attractions are the Hartshorn Marina and the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts.

Muskegon is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland, Michigan metro area.
