Portland is in Ionia County, and in the West-Southwest Region. This community is located east of Grand Rapids between Grand Rapids and Lansing along Interstate 96 on the banks of the Grand River near Lake Morrison. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,063, an increase of 174 since 1990. Portland's rivers accent the entire area and are the reason why this city was named Portland back in 1838 (a fine loading place for boats). At that time, the town played a key role in the distribution of lumber due to its excellent location. It was incorporated into a village in 1869. Today, Portland is has a diverse economy, ranging from many manufacturing facilities to small businesses. The beautiful downtown area features an old-fashioned town clock overlooking main Street and adjacent bridge, complete with scenic walkway to the park on the opposite side of the river.
