Reed City is in Osceola County (of which it is the county seat), and in the West-Southwest Region. This community is located north of Big Rapids at the junction of US Hwy 131 and US Hwy 10.
Reed City was founded in 1870 by William M. Slosson, Fredrick H. Todd, William A. Higbee and James M. Reed. In 1871, the Grand Rapids & Indiana RR reached this area and built a station here. It was incorporated as a village 1872 and later a city in 1932.
Today, Reed City has excellent access to the Pere Marquette Trail and White Pine Trail State Parks, part of Michigan's Rails to Trails. These trails make this are a popular location to spend a full day, or hiking one of the trails.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,498, an increase of 119 since 1990.
