Standish is in Arenac County (of which it is the county seat).
This community is located at the junction of US Hwy 23 and Hwy 61, and north of Bay City on I-75.
John D. Standish, of Detroit, built a mill here in Standish in 1871, and had Peter M. Angus plat the village for it to be on the line of the Michigan Central Railroad, then coming through. The town was incorporated as a village in 1893 and as a city in 1904.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,462, an increase of 74 since 1990.
