In St. Louis County, the small community of Babbitt is located northeast of Virginia off Hwy 21, in the Lakes of the Northern Lights Region. The city lies on Birch Lake in St. Louis County. Several other lakes are nearby. The earliest traces of man in the Babbitt area have been uncovered on the north end of Birch Lake. This ancient Indian life dating back to 500 BC has been identified as the Laurel Indian culture.
