Enjoy the spectacular sight of hundreds of North American butterflies at the Minnesota Zoo's Butterfly Garden and 'Their Backyard' exhibit. Walks through the outdoor netted garden reveal colorful butterflies amid a diversity of plant species that provide food and shelter. More than 30 different species of North American butterflies and moths fly freely in this unique interactive exhibit; butterflies to look for this summer include the easily-recognized Monarch, American Painted Lady, Viceroy, Red-spotted Purple, and Mourning Cloak in various stages of their life cycles. Look for a few species of moths as well, including the Luna, Cynthia and IO. The Butterfly Garden is located near 'Their Backyard' exhibit by the Children's Zoo. The newly expanded Butterfly Garden is open Father's Day weekend-Labor Day, free with zoo admission.
