Mille Lacs Indian Museum

Search Onamia Minnesota

Opened in 1996, the Mille Lacs Indian Museum offers exhibits telling the story of the Mille Lacs Band. The building's arching window wall reflects the shoreline of Lake Mille Lacs; fashioned in cedar, the exterior is highlighted with a copper dome and inset tile band designed by Mille Lacs elder Batiste Sam. Inside, visitors can trace their journey from settlement in Northern Minnesota to the present time. Videos, computer interactives, listening stations and artifacts relate dance traditions to sovereignty issues. Traditional cooking, birch-bark basketry and beadwork are demonstrated in the museum's crafts room. A restored trading post adjacent to the museum retains its 1930s appearance, offering gift sales by Mille Lacs artisans. Located on the southwest shore of Lake Mille Lacs on Hwy 169.
