In the West Central Lakes Region, Shakopee is the seat of Scott County. It lies in the southwest corner of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 16,553, an increase of 4,814 since 1990. Area attractions include: Valley Fair, Mystic Lake Casino, Dakota Country Casino, Canterbury Park, Murphys Landing, the Renaissance Festival and Raceway Park. Shakopee attracts over four million tourists annually.
