Sleepy Eye is located in Brown County in the Historic Prairies Region on US 14 near New Ulm and the Cottonwood River. It was named after Ish-Tak-Ha-Ba (Chief Sleepy Eye), the leader of a band of Sisseton Dakota Indians.The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 3,605, a decrease of 89 since 1990.
