Neosho is located in Newton County, of which it is the county seat, 18 miles south of Joplin along Highway 71 on the Ozark Plateau. Neosho is the childhood home of artist Thomas Hart Benton. Neosho is part of the Joplin, Missouri metro area.The name derives from Indian term for "clear, cold water.
