The name actually stands for the Clark Fork of the Columbia River. It is named for William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. There are 273 miles of the river within Montana. It begins in the northeast corner at the border with Idaho and passes through Missoula. Its headwaters are near The Continental Divide just west of Helena.
