Freezeout Lake is Montana's primary snow goose staging area, a place where they gather and rest before flying onward. In spring, the snow geese head for Alberta and central Saskatchewan in Canada, eventually reaching the Arctic coast. They usually reach Freezeout from California in early March. Best viewing is from sunrise to 10:00 am and 4:30 pm to sunset. Freezeout is located 3 miles north of Fairfield and 10 miles south of Choteau along Highway 89.
