The seat of Fergus County, Lewistown is located on US 87 and Hwy 200 on the banks of the Judith River near Lewis & Clark National Forest.
Located at the geographical center of the state, Lewistown began as a small trading post.
Self-guiding tour brochures are available for areas listed on the National Register: Silk Stocking and Central Business districts, Courthouse Square, Judith Place and Stone Quarry. The Central Montana Museum is on on E. Main and the Lewistown Art Center is on 8th Ave. N. Big Spring Trout Hatchery, south of town on Hwy 238, is the state's largest coldwater production station for several species of trout and kokanee salmon. Headquarters for the C.M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge is located on Airport Rd., and features an exhibition pasture of bison.
