The Milk River has its origins in the Rocky Mountains in Glacier National Park. It flows northeastward, entering Alberta, Canada before turning southeast and reentering Montana near Havre. It passes near Malta and Glasgow before joining the Missouri River just below the Fort Peck Dam.
The river was discovered by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who gave it its name due to the fact the Clark thought its color "resembles tea with a considerable mixture of milk."
