Buford is located in northwestern North Dakota in southwestern Williams County on the banks of the Missouri River about 20 miles southwest of Williston.
In the mid- to late-19th century, Ft. Buford was a crucial implacement for the U.S. Army, being sited at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers and serving as a supply depot. Gen. George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Cavalry called this home at one time. In the early 1800s Lewis and Clark passed through the area.
