Ellendale is located in southeastern North Dakota in Dickey County (of which it is the county seat) about 100 miles southwest of Fargo and 5 miles north of the South Dakota border. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,644, a decrease of 154 since 1990.

Nearby attractions include the xxx located about 20 miles northwest of town near Merricourt. In addition, Doyle Memorial State Park is about 45 miles to the west-northwest.

For golfers, the town offers Ellendale Country Club, a semi-private facility which has an open guest policy. The 9-hole course is about 2,800 yards long with a par of 36.
