Killdeer is located in western North Dakota in Dunn County about 90 miles southwest of Minot and 10 miles south of Lake Sakakawea.
Located in a recreationally rich area of the state, locals and visitors alike take advantage of Little Missouri State Park about 5 miles north of town and Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge about 5 miles to the southeast.
History buffs will want to walk through Killdeer Battlefield Historic Site which is set amid stunning buttes and badlands and located about 5 miles west of town.
