Originally established to preserve the area's prairie heritage, the 26,900 acre refuge occupies native prairie grasslands and rolling hills interspersed with potholes or wetlands. Hundreds of ponds frequented by waterfowl dot this pothole region. Sharp-tailed grouse can be photographed from a blind. Hunting for deer and sharp-tailed grouse is permitted by license in season.
Other activities include birdwatching, hiking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Vehicle and hiking trails are available.
Open daily 24 hours in May through September.
