Stanton is located in west central North Dakota in Mercer County (of which it is the county seat) on the banks of the Missouri River about 50 miles northwest of Bismarck.
On the "things to do and see" list are the Knife River Indian Village NHS just north of town, the Ft. Clark Historic Site about 5 miles to the south and Ft. Mandan Historical Site 15 miles east of town.
Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy Lake Sakakawea State Park on the lake's southern shores and Cross Ranch State Park located about 25 miles to the southeast.
